Even goals should be SMART

For many of us, the beginning of the year is a time for reflection and evaluation of what we have accomplished, achieved, and succeeded at, but also where we were not as successful. At the same time, it is a time for setting new goals, which should be SMART.

When we hear the word “smart,” we first think of electronics with the latest technologies and functionalities designed to make our lives easier or more pleasant. The concept of SMART goals does not represent any high-tech method for setting goals correctly with one click. It is a goal-setting technique that makes them achievable and realistic.

S (Specific) A goal should be clearly specified and understandably defined. Unclear and vague interpretations bring confusion about what we actually want to achieve. Without a clear formulation of the goal, it is impossible to properly set a plan to achieve it.

M (Measurable) The result should be measurable. If a goal is not measurable, we will not be able to determine at the end whether we have achieved the results we wanted.

A (Achievable) A goal should be defined so that it is realistic and feasible. Several factors that can affect the achievability of the goal must be taken into account, e.g., financial and time requirements, necessary personnel and material resources, etc.

R (Relevant) Relevance in terms of alignment with our direction and our vision. A goal should be set so that it is beneficial and meaningful in a long-term context.

T (Timed) A goal should have a clearly set deadline for completion. Without this time limitation, activities may slow down and the achievement of the goal may be delayed.
